BREVARD COUNTY, FL – Modern English made an appearance at popular recording studio ‘Lily Pad Recording Studio’ in Cocoa Village on Friday ahead of their The 80’s Cruise 2022 cruise from March 5-12 on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas in Cape Canaveral.
Simply put, Modern English’s “I Melt With You” is one of the most iconic songs of the New Wave era. It garnered heavy rotation on the then-thriving Modern Rock radio format, MTV and dance clubs around the world, and was prominently featured in the classic 1983 film Valley Girl, starring a young Nicolas Cage.
On 1982’s After the Snow, the band’s sound evolved from the dark, brooding, uplifting post-punk found on its debut album, Mesh & Lace, to a more commercial, radio-driven mix of synthesizers, guitars, catchy beats and the incomparable voice of singer Robbie Grey. .
As the title suggests, the icy sound featured on Mesh & Lace melted away on After the Snow to reveal more concise and powerful songs, underscored by “I Melt With You” which brought the band from the underground to the mainstream. dominant. It’s such a popular song that the band received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2020 BMI Awards for six million radio plays.
After the Snow was produced by famed Hugh Jones whose production credits include albums by Echo and the Bunnymen, Simple Minds, The Damned and many more, and the LP was released on legendary 4AD Records in the UK. United and Licensed to Sire Records in the US
Formed in Colchester, England, the band self-released their first single on their own label Limp Records before signing to 4AD, which is home to like-minded artists like Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. Laying the groundwork for future musical movements such as Gothic and Industrial, Modern English would catch the eye of famed BBC DJ John Peel, who featured the band twice on his programme.

Modern English would record various records over the years, and most recently the band released their latest album, 2017’s Take Me To The Trees, an album that reconnected the band to their youth, to the fervent and fruitful world of late 1970s/early 1980s. post-punk Britain.
Given that Modern English’s roots were post-punk icons Wire and Joy Division – dark and austere yet still melodic and passionate – Take Me To The Trees is a throwback to the sound and vision of their earliest work. which even James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem described as “a sneaky secret that everyone wipes out, because they just think it’s going to be an ‘I Melt With You’ but it sounds way scarier than any record of Joy Division [Mesh & Lace].”
Modern English will make the following appearances in the United States in August and September. The dates below with more performances for Spring/Summer 2022 will be announced soon.
