Rapper Gap is suing his former record label for trying to collect on his solo work, while his band ‘Migos’ would be on the outs.
According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Cardi B husband filed a lawsuit against Quality control records – claiming she brokered a deal with them in January 2021 where he picked up the rights to her solo recordings and songwriting. In the filing, he says he was paid “a lot for those rights.”
Following the deal, Offset says he released a new single called “54321” and the label claimed ownership of the song and all of his future solo songs.
Rapper Offset wants his solo music to belong to him
Don’t forget that the company has an overall deal with Offset’s band “The Migos” which has been plagued by separation allegations. “Quality Control also collected a significant portion of all the money Offset earned through their ingenuity and hard work,” the suit reads. Adding, “When he realized the full ramification of the deal he had made, Offset set out to regain control of his solo career (despite Quality Control’s excessive deal with Migos as a band, which remains in square.”
At this point, Offset says he wants to make it clear he’s “bringing this action to enforce his rights and make it clear to the world that Offset, not Quality Control, owns Offset’s music.”
“The Migos” contradict the rumors of a breakup
Interestingly, Offset seemed to put down rumors of a “Migos” breakup after Takeoff celebrated his 28th birthday with Quavo giving him a brand new channel. The bling, created by famed jeweler Elliot Eliantte, featured the three members of Migos. The string would be worth $350,000. “Happy birthday Tak. I had to get him a three headed monster,” Quavo said on Instagram. Adding, “Highly anticipated but never played again. Ice Ice. I hope you like it, nephew.
All three artists now have “three-headed monster” channels. A rep for the band spoke to the media, saying the trio are still together and have only canceled one of their shows due to a scheduling conflict.
In case you were wondering, Offset takes this case VERY seriously and has hired one of the best lawyers in the country – Bryan Freeman.
Cardi B is set to direct one of her hubby’s music videos
So, Offset is now planning to release another song called “Code” with Moneybagg Yo – this weekend – and wants to make it clear that Motown Records is handling his solo career. It looks like the rapper wants a judge to make sure the court rules that Quality Control has no rights to his solo music — even if the deal with “Migos” remains in place.
On a more positive note, Cardi B is reportedly set to direct one of Offset’s music videos and fans are thrilled! During a Q&A, fans suggested the rap queen spend more time in the director’s chair, to which she replied, “I run a [of] Offset’s music videos with a very sexy and talented artist. How are you [be] amazing.” Many believe she is referring to the “Have Mercy” artist Chloe Bailey.
We can’t wait!
