Norfolk musicians will soon have a new place to rehearse and record their songs with a £ 20,000 recording studio that will open in a former bank safe.
North Walsham Phoenix Group plans to open the studio in the basement of the former Barclays Bank in the town’s market square after acquiring the building in September last year to transform it into a center for young people and the community.
The group have now received a grant of £ 20,100 from the North Walsham Community Shop to fund the studio and its equipment, which does not yet have an opening date.
Once open, the studio will be open to bookings from musicians of all genres and may feature a streaming room so that live performances can be streamed from the building.
In the future, it is also hoped that the venue will be able to offer various courses related to music production.
The studio is believed to be the first of its kind in the county outside of Norwich.
North Walsham Phoenix Group President Mal Gray said: “We brought in Wayne Beauchamp and Ron Sayer who play in bands at the Vault and pitch our idea to them and they said it would make a recording studio. unbelievable.
“It will be really positive for the city with local musicians able to embrace it, but we envision being able to make it available to disadvantaged people as well as the mental health benefits of music are well documented.
“It will also ensure a source of income for our building, as the groups will hire it as a rehearsal or recording space.
“We could have an educational setting where people could broadcast live to help people learn about music without having to be there and obviously we could also broadcast live events on sites and also create podcasts on local topics.
“We cannot thank the community store enough, their grant will allow us to build it.
“Everyone is in dire need of help getting out on the other side of this pandemic, so this is something positive to hold onto. “
The bank’s historic safe door will remain in place despite the new studio with organizers keen to respect the city’s heritage.
To create the entire community hub, the phoenix group aims to raise £ 150,000, anyone wishing to donate can do so at: https://justgiving.com/campaign/phoenixbuilding?fbclid=IwAR2jJFzmpKsssa4gs0PSrC_KpXsB7zXq7f7dSAqejTKGRPftgethrDoFqq0
