ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Calling all singers, artists and other creators in Star City! A new free recording studio will open to the public in March, but you can get a glimpse of it on Thursday.
Roanoke Parks and Recreation (PLAY Roanoke) invited the community to an open house for the new Fishburn Mansion recording studio at Fishburn Mansion. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, the public can tour the studio, test out gear, and chat with PLAY Roanoke staff about this new gear.
According to PLAY Roanoke, the new studio has equipment for creating a variety of media, like audio tracks, voice recordings and podcasts. Users can also edit their projects using studio equipment and software, or they can use their own equipment with a plug/play option.
Officials say sports supervisor Antonio Gonzalez envisioned the program, aimed at providing a venue for creative expression without judgement. Music would be a big part of his life and a creative outlet.
“I’ve seen a lot of young people get into music and find new ways to express themselves,” Gonzalez said. “It’s something outside the traditional box of programs we offer, and I’m excited to bring something new to the table.”
PLAY Roanoke says this gear is part of Star City Safe, a citywide initiative focused on expanding services to public facilities and providing safe recreation and learning opportunities at no cost to participants. .
The property will initially be open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Users must reserve their studio time in advance through the online registration system or by calling 540-853-2236.
During studio hours, a staff member will be on hand to help you with equipment and the recording process. However, all studio users aged 13 or under must be accompanied by an adult.
“Strong social infrastructure like parks and programs is crucial to our community,” said PLAY Roanoke Director of Recreation Patrick Boas. “We are honored to provide more opportunities for local artists of all ages to perform and create, and we hope to see this program thrive.”
The studio is located on the third floor of the historic Fishburn Mansion and is only accessible by stairs.
For those who need ADA access, officials say the Melrose Branch and Raleigh Court Branch libraries offer free recording studio space. For more information on these spaces or to reserve them at the libraries, please call the Melrose branch at 540-853-2648 or the Raleigh Court branch at 540-853-2240.
