The Old Sawmills has a long history, used by medieval merchants in its early days, inspired by a classic novel, and then by a world famous recording studio.
A Stone Age ax was discovered at the site in the early 1960s, suggesting a settlement here from time immemorial, while the area is mentioned in the Domesday Book and evidence of medieval activity which may still be seen with the remains of a medieval wharf clearly visible. at the head of the stream.
The real estate agent explained that the cove, known as Bodmin Pill, was used by medieval Bodmin merchants, who chose this location as their preferred landing point from the sea.
The property is also believed to have inspired the author of the classic novel The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame, as the author was a regular visitor to nearby Fowey and was married at Fowey Church.
In 1907 Grahame completed what became his most successful work during a long stay, where he spent many afternoons by the river.
A documented river excursion in May 1907 revealed that the author and his friends were picnicking in a small cove off the Fowey River, which is said to have inspired Ratty and Mole’s first picnic outing in the first chapter. Bodmin Pill is the only stream with a watermill in this locality and its description matches that of Bodmin Pill.

They added that the foundations of their kitchen can be discovered in the woods overlooking the river, now with a gazebo built on the site.
