Throughout hip hop, dozens of record labels have run the game at any given time — and according to Billboard’s latest cover, Yo Gotti’s record label has officially won the new title. The magazine crowned Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group (CMG) as the “hardest working label in hip hop” thanks to its list of stars, including Moneybagg Yo, Blac Youngsta and 42 Dugg.
“Through his record label, Collective Music Group (CMG), the hip-hop mogul has succeeded what most well-known rappers with footprints don’t: bring top underground names into mainstream audiences while continually smashing his own personal bests. With its 10 signers, Gotti has established CMG as a formidable brand on the streets and on the charts,” Billboard says of Yo Gotti and CMG.
Yo Gotti explains why, despite many artists vying for a place on his label, he refuses to chase anyone. “As a label, one thing we don’t do and never will do is be in a bidding war. Want to be with us? Then we will find business terms that make sense to both of us.
He also says he tries to instill in his artists that chasing money shouldn’t be their only goal. “Young artists are blinded by dollar signs. Everyone wants a new car, moving their mom to a bigger house, jewelry, the finer things in life. I think everyone should have exactly what they want, but there are methods, strategies, and tactics to get it all. Artists put me off when it’s all about money.
Interscope Records CEO John Janick praises Yo Gotti and the label he built, particularly highlighting his business acumen. “It’s rare to find someone who is an incredible creative but also an excellent businessman. I think he’s a needle in a haystack, [because] he has mastered both of these things.
There’s no end to quoting his hard work ethic, as Yo Gotti admits vacations are pointless because “I like to work. In fact, I feel like if I didn’t work, I’d be bored as hell. It looks like CMG will continue their reign at the top of the charts and beyond.
